1. Look for specialized doctors

Rhinoplasty is common today but it is also one of the most difficult cosmetic procedures to perform:

  • It is a small and delicate surgical area.
  • The proportion between the nose and the rest of the face must be correct.
  • All functions of the nose should be preserved as much as possible.
  • Your bone structure, the cartilage present, etc. also influence the complexity of the procedure.

When choosing a doctor, it is therefore very important that he or she has a great affinity with facial and nasal surgery within his or her field of expertise.

2. Discuss the possible options and your own expectations thoroughly

Expectations are an important factor in determining whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty. The best candidates for rhinoplasty primarily want to improve the appearance of their nose, but are not looking for ultimate perfection. Furthermore, ideal candidates are happy with their lives and do not expect rhinoplasty to change them.

As for the procedure, depending on the desired result, some bone and cartilage may be removed or tissue may be added (from the nasal septum or ear septum, a rib implant or synthetic material).

Finally, keep in mind that the natural aging process can slightly affect the shape and size of your nose.

3. Be realistic with the recovery period

Most patients stop working and other important activities for a week, after which they can return to work with a small splint on the nose.

It usually takes a few weeks for the bruising to go away and it can even take a few months for most of the swelling to go away. Rhinoplasty is complex and it often takes a year or even two years to see and feel the final result. In addition, everyone recovers at their own pace.

4. Doctors have their own style

One person likes a small upturned nose, another prefers a straight narrow nose. Tastes differ, both what you want and what a doctor can realize for you. Every doctor has his/her own sense of aesthetics and a certain 'signature' in surgical terms. Take the time to estimate what kind of noses your doctor can realize, what is physically possible and whether this is in line with your expectations. View or ask for before and after photos and discuss the options with a simulation via photo editing if possible.

5. Trust is important

Being on the same page as your doctor is crucial for clear communication, aligning expectations and establishing general agreements before, during and after surgery. Dare to ask questions, throw all doubts on the table and trust your gut feeling. After all, it's about your face!
