Facial Feminization Surgery

Table of contents:

Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS surgery) is a combination of surgical procedures aimed at reducing what we call 'masculine facial features', making the face appear softer and more feminine.

Many trans women feel insecure and worried about the fact that their outward appearance does not match their inner being. An FFS operation can help them to live confidently as the woman they have always been.

What is Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS)?

Facial Feminization Surgery is a combination of surgical procedures that reduce masculine facial features to give your face a more feminine appearance. The operations concern both the bone structure and the soft, overlying tissue.

These are all procedures that can be part of FFS:

Do I Need Facial Feminization Surgery?

FFS can be a solution if you:

  • Are a trans woman who can't find a way to look in the mirror comfortably.
  • Are a trans woman who feels that certain facial features cause misgendering and you find this disturbing.
  • Are unhappy with some facial features that you would prefer to feminize.

Your “passing” can improve thanks to this surgery. It can help you to live confidently as the woman you are without having to worry about being spoken to incorrectly, for example. This was proven in a study in which 118 of our patients mapped their feelings about their passing before and after their FFS.

FFS can help people better express their true identity, making them feel better about themselves. This in turn can lead to more self-confidence and fewer social fears and phobias, which the LGBTQI+ community often struggles with.

Of course, no one could say it better than these former FFS patients themselves:

What was your life like before and after FFS?

Quote from Munroe Bergdorf, former patient of 2pass Clinic:

There was a moment when I was afraid to leave the house. I didn't dare go out into the world and that's no way to live. That's when having facial feminization surgery (FFS) became really crucial for me.

I just wanted to live a life where gender dysphoria didn't affect me so much that I couldn't focus on work or be vulnerable in sexual situations. I wanted freedom.

Now I feel better than ever. I can leave the house without makeup and without fear of being attacked. I didn't realize how disturbed my body experience was until I had that operation. I also didn't know how much I was holding back when it came to intimacy. If you don't feel connected to your body, how can you build something with someone? When I got closer to myself, I was able to get closer to other people.”

What are the pros and cons of an FFS operation?

Benefits

  • A more feminine face;
  • Strengthens social acceptance and integration as a woman, also called 'passing'.
  • Positive effect on self-image and self-esteem because the female face confirms gender identity.
  • After two to five weeks you are back to work.

Cons

  • The swelling immediately after surgery can be scary, but usually goes away quickly, don't worry!
  • You may experience temporary numbness where the surgeon has worked on the bone structure.
  • A full recovery period can take four months to a year. The recovery process takes longer in some cases than in others. Patience and trust are a requirement.
