Canthoplasty — Lifting the corner of the eye

Table of contents:

A canthoplasty is a surgical procedure used to elevate the outer corner of the eye, or to correct a drooping tendency in this part of the eyelid. The procedure is also used to create the much sought after 'cat eye' look, where the outer corner of the eye is lifted at an angle. This operation can easily be combined with the rest of one Facial Feminization Surgery.

Indication for a canthoplasty?

There is an indication for performing a canthoplasty when the outer corner of the eye droops.

Procedure

  • A canthoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is our preference.
  • Although the exact procedure for a canthoplasty varies from patient to patient, the main goal is to cut the lower 'canthal tendon' so that it can be repositioned and tightened.
  • Generally, an incision is made in the outer corner of the patient's eyelids to access the tendon. Care is taken to ensure that the incision is performed within the natural crease of the eyelid, to minimize the appearance of scars as much as possible.
Incision of the inferior canthal tendon and suturing the inferior canthal tendon to the periosteum.

Recovery

You can expect that the lower eyelid will feel a little bruised and there will be bruising. These will disappear after 2-3 weeks.

Complications

Complications that may arise include:

  • Asymmetry;
  • Overcorrection (too high) or undercorrection (too low).
